St Ives 3 (O) vs Newmarket 2 O

After a long Christmas break, the away side started short on confidence but long on effort, with players moving the ball short, short, and short again through the opposition opening up some chances early on.

The opening goal came from an unfortunate moment that will live short in the memory: a shot going wide was deflected in off the keeper onto the post which rolled over the line for an unfortunate own goal.

Soon after, the keeper’s misunderstanding of the rules led to a quickly taken free hit, which saw a deflection on target with no attempt to save it.

A third goal was conceded from a well-played advantage call, the umpire wisely keeping it short and flowing, punishing a short lapse in discipline as the attack swept through.

Despite the setbacks, the highlight came late: an excellent deflective effort at short range, all reflex and timing, forced a brilliant stick save from the opposition goalkeeper, who, in his own shorts, reacted in a short instant to deny a goal.
