Match Report: Cambridge City 6 vs St Ives 3
St Ives 3 travelled away to face Cambridge City 6 in what proved to be a competitive and hard-fought encounter, eventually ending in a 2–2 draw.
The game began evenly, with both sides playing positive hockey as St Ives settled into the match. As the visitors warmed up and found their rhythm, the contest looked well balanced. However, a turnover in possession allowed Cambridge City to capitalise quickly, breaking forward and slotting home to take an early 1–0 lead.
In one memorable first-half moment, Leo made a somewhat heroic attempt to win back possession, stretching to reach the ball — only to slip at the crucial moment and end up taking the ball straight to the stomach. Despite the painful outcome, it summed up the team’s commitment and determination early on.
St Ives responded well, beginning to find their shape and build attacks of their own. A well-worked move from Will seeing Josh allowing him to pick up the ball and cleverly reverse it underneath the goalkeeper’s legs to bring St Ives level at 1–1. The midfield and defence remained strong, breaking up several Cambridge attacks and keeping the pressure manageable at the back.
Half Time: 1–1
After the break, St Ives came out determined to push for another goal while staying disciplined defensively. Will and Matt put in some crucial tackles to keep the side in the game, showing resilience against repeated Cambridge pressure.
Goalkeeper Alex then produced a stunning moment of shot-stopping, making three outstanding saves in quick succession to deny the home side and keep the scores level.
St Ives soon earned a short corner after Leo got a vital touch inside the D. Will injected the ball out to Ollie, and although it initially came loose, Leo reacted quickest, striking a powerful shot towards the back post where Will was perfectly placed to skilfully tap in and give St Ives a 2–1 lead.
The visitors then faced adversity when Matt received a green card for dissent, leaving St Ives down to 10 players. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the team showed great character and organisation, defending strongly and refusing to concede during the suspension.
Cambridge continued to press and were eventually rewarded with a well-executed short corner, levelling the score at 2–2. St Ives kept pushing, creating promising chances from the wings and with strikers making intelligent runs, but were unable to find a decisive third goal.
At the final whistle, the match finished 2–2 — a hard-earned point away from home, with strong defensive performances, excellent goalkeeping from Alex, and great team spirit throughout.
Will winning motm for great defending and great working back.
