St Ives 3s VS The Penguins
The Mighty Ives travelled to Kings Lynn on this bright but brisk Saturday and produced an impressive display of Hockey, but was it enough? Stay tuned to find out…
First Half:
The match began with Ives asserting early dominance, controlling the pace of play and maintaining possession. Their relentless pressure paid off in the opening 15 minutes when play from the midfielders and forwards caused the penguins to flap and make a mistake. The ball was won high up the pitch and Ives broke strong and fast towards goal. Luke found himself in a shooting position but unfortunately the keeper came out quick and stopped the shot. Denners started the game really strong saving multiple chances with quick reflex’s and making the opposition work really hard. Unfortunately it was the pelicans that opened the scoring from a short corner, a straight strike that managed to sneak its way past Denman resulted in Ives finding themselves 1 goal down but confidence and belief was still high. The remainder of the first half saw some excellent defending with aerial balls controlled left right and centre and JT showed why youth doesn’t alway trump experience ;).
HT: 1-0 to the Peacocks
Second Half:
As the whistle blew to signal the start of the second half, Ives were visibly fired up. Trailing 1-0, they knew they had to come out with more intensity if they were to turn the game around. The parsnips, on the other hand, seemed to have the game in control, but were warned that a fightback was imminent. Ives started well maintaining possession and using the width well. Despite this it was however the pelicans that were able to get the first goal of the half. A pass across the middle of the pitch was intercepted which left the Ives defence vulnerable leaving Denners having to sweep up, unfortunately the pelicans forward was able to just get past and Ives started again from the middle of the pitch.
Ives started to get back into the game. With lots more attacking opportunities coming our way and really good play done the wings, despite their best efforts the pigeons defence were too strong. The Pigeons continued to attack well in the second half forcing Denman to make an unorthodox back heel save! Despite this fantastic display of goalkeeping Denman was soon after beaten by an aerial ball that fell to the opposition striker and he was some how able to get the ball past Denman for their third. As the game progressed Ives suddenly found themselves down to 10 players and there was a lot of confusion to why this was…I am not entirely sure the umpire who gave the card was even 100% sure what was going on…as the game progressed the penguins were able to extend there lead further and it was at this point where I’ve felt the game was over shortly after the final whistle blown.
