St Ives triumph over Uni in close fought match

Sometimes things are more important than hockey, our thoughts yesterday were with all of the Cambs Uni family after the sad passing of one of their own Clarissa Nicholls. A moments silence was done prior to push back in remembrance 💛

For the third week in a row, St Ives M1 won their match by a single goal to make it 9 points from the first 4 games. Facing a Cambridge Uni team sitting bottom of the league table, Ives could have thought they were in for an easier game but with Freshers now joining, they instead faced a full 16 man squad with lots of new faces from the previous season.

In an even first period, both teams matched each other in large parts before Uni took the lead after an attacker managed to find space in the D. St Ives levelled through Adam Stefanelli-Wilson from a field goal and then took the lead through Alex Bilalis-Stone's first goal for the Club from a short corner routine. St Ives matched the intensity of the Uni squad and restricted them to half chances.

In the second half, the Uni side were awarded a penalty corner and this was dispatched into the top corner. St Ives did not wilt in the October heat however and scored the winner with 5 minutes remaining. After a turnover high up the pitch, Adam Stefanelli-Wilson rounded his defender before driving the base line and selflessly squaring for Rory Mooney to score from close range.

Man of the match went to Simon Shorter for his stalwart defending.

Next up are Kettering at the temporary home of Northstowe with Ives looking to build on their momentum.
