Saint Ives mens 2’s recorded their first victory of the season with a battling away win against Cambridge City 6’s.
The team started well with a number of searching passes and thought they had scored in the first 10 minutes but the goal was wiped out when Greg Say was judged to have kicked the ball while being fouled in the build-up. St. Ives eventually did score a legitimate goal, from a well worked penalty corner which saw Tom Hingston score from close-range, and the team went in at half time with a 1-0 lead.
The visitors continued their dominance in the second half which saw searching runs from Greg Say and David Ranner but the crosses were not being converted into goals. The dominance was partially broken when Joep Goode and Andrew Smith both received green cards for playing the ball after the whistle had been blown but, in his return to the pitch, Smith scored the team’s second goal when his sharp cross was deflected into the goal by the Cambs keeper.
Cambs scored a scrappy goal late in the half but St. Ives confidently held on until the final whistle.
MOM was Andy Smith for some excellent attacking play.
